Known as the most accessible snow resort in Australia, Mt Buller has everything you need to enjoy an exhilarating day on the slopes. Twenty-two lifts help skiers and snowboarders take advantage of the 300 hectares of snowy terrain and the varied runs range in difficulty from gentle slopes to challenging black diamond runs. Elsewhere, there’s terrain and toboggan parks allowing everyone to get in on the family fun. If you prefer to enjoy views of the snow through a window, opt for the scenic chairlift, relax in Australia’s highest day spa or unwind in one of the 30 bars and restaurants at the base of the mountain.

Falls Creek is the official training ground of the Australian national cross-country team and the spiritual home of the sport in Victoria. With more than 65km of free cross-country trails and remote cabins tucked away among the trees, visitors can experience true ski-in/ski-out accommodation. Add to that an impressive Ski School, tobogganing, terrain parks and excellent downhill runs, and you have all the makings of an outdoor adventure.

Lake Mountain

Just a two-hour drive when you pick up a car rental in Melbourne, Lake Mountain is easy to get to and great for families. Unlike some of the other resorts in the region, Lake Mountain has no accommodation, making it ideal for a day-long detour spent on the slopes. More than 37k of cross-country trails cater to all abilities, and extra options like snowshoeing, snowmobiling and tobogganing mean you can pack a week’s worth of family fun into an afternoon.

Mt St Gwinear

There are more than 20 kilometres of cross-country trails and two toboggan runs for the family to enjoy – and with no ski lifts, this resort doesn’t attract the same crowds as some of the other ski fields in the region, making it a great choice if you want a simple day of family fun spent playing in the snow.

Mt Hotham
