Rent a car in Montpellier with Europcar

Built into the hilly terrain of the Mediterranean coast, Montpellier is one of the most unique cities in France. Namely because it is one of the only French cities without a Roman or Greek heritage. Instead it’s 19th Century architecture and gothic stylings give the city a mythical charm.

This coastal city is ideally situated for exploring the south of France, with Marseille to the east and Perpignan and Toulouse to the west.

With four Europcar stations situated across the city, it is very easy to rent the car or van of your choice in Montpellier. Two of these are in the city centre. One is conveniently placed next to the train station for those travelling by rail. Another is located in the d’Argent district. For those flying into Montpellier, there is a car hire station at the airport, and for those holidaying in La Grande Motte there is a Europcar station in the town.

Smaller car models are recommended for driving around Montpellier, such as the Fiat 500 or Volkswagen Polo, while models such as the Opel Mokka and Renault Talisman are available for larger groups and families. If you need something even bigger, a large selection of vans are also available to hire in Montpellier.

Renting in Montpellier with Europcar is easy and flexible with both long and short-term rental available to suit you.

To rent a car in France with Europcar you need a valid EU driver’s licence.

In France, the national speed limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 110 km/h on dual carriageways, 90 km/h on other road types, and 50 km/h in built up areas.

Motorway speed limits are reduced by 10 km/h in wet conditions. If your visibility is less than 50 metres in front of you, the speed limit is 50 km/h on all road types.

Congestion can be an issue at peak times as the city centre is pedestrianised and road signs can be sparse in areas.

There are six inner-city underground car parks which are open 24/7, however with much of the city pedestrianised, there are also many affordable parking options on the edge of town, from where you can explore the city on foot.

Discover Montpellier and the surrounding area by car

Renting a car in Montpellier gives you the freedom to explore every bit of this seductive city as well as providing the option of getting around the city’s diverse surrounding regions. An hour to the east you will find the evocative beauty of the Camargue with its shallow salt pans and pink flamingos, while further north is Orange with its dilapidated Roman theatre, cathedrals and monumental archway, listed as world heritage sites.

Beautiful windswept beaches can be found just a short drive from the heart of Montpellier; the Plage de l’Espiguette with its sandy dunes and rolling waves is easily accessible, as are the beaches of Sète to the east, with easy parking and good facilities.

Driving on from Montpellier? Aix en Provence (155 kilometres away) and Marseille (170 kilometres away) are easily accessible by car, as is Perpignan (177 kilometres to the west, approaching the Spanish border).

If you are on the road with kids, a visit to Europark is essential. With over 80 different attractions set over 7 hectares of land, Europark is the largest permanent funfair in France. Complete with a 5D experience simulator, rides and roller-coasters, plus a range of funfair games and restaurants, it’s an experience not to be missed! Located just an hour from Montpellier, it is easily accessible by car and has ample parking.

Twice a year the Feria d’Arles festival takes place. In April and September, the sleepy town becomes a vibrant fiesta as the streets are filled with bustling crowds. Around 500,000 people visit the festival each year. Moving orchestras serenade visitors and concerts spring up throughout the cobbled passages. The open air bullfighting rings are still active in Arles and visiting the town during this festive period is a truly unique experience.
