Driving in Fremantle
Renting a car in Australia means you will require an international driving licence, in addition to a valid licence from your country of residence.
Speed limits differ across Australia but in general, on motorways the maximum speed limit is 130 km/h. On single-carriageway it lowers to 100 km/h and 60-50 km/h in urban areas.
Fremantle has many on-street and off-street parking spots. Across the city times and charges range from half an hour to full day parking, so make sure you check signs before you park. There are some zones where an hour of free parking is offered. You can pay with cash, credit/debit cards and the CellOPark app which you need to download in advance.
There are several tolls on Australian roads. Most of these use an electronic system, so buy an e-tag pass in advance of your trip. Otherwise you can pay your toll online, up to 3 days after you have passed through.
Remember when driving in remote parts of Australia that road travel can be long with less petrol stops or rest points. Plan your route carefully and consider weather conditions that could affect your driving. Watch out for animals like kangaroos which could jump out in the roads. Four-wheeled drives are necessary in areas with rocky terrains or bad road conditions.

From Fremantle there are other attractions along the coast which are a short drive away. Head to the Rockingham and enjoy the scenic drive along the foreshore, just half an hour away. Stop at Cape Peron and take a plunge in the clear waters of Shoalwater Islands Marine Park and scuba dive around the coral reefs.
Ten minutes on from Cape Peron, take a ferry over to Penguin Island and meet the smallest of the species - the little penguin. See these adorable miniature animals, as well pelicans, sea lions and wild dolphins. The entire island is geared up for you to see as much as possible - from walks, glass bottomed boat tours and water sports.
