Experience Dublin’s Past with Europcar

The architecture in the city tells a visual story of the past dating back to times of British rule. This is readily apparent in the vast number of Georgian structures, which was a product of a Georgian sprawl occurring in the 16th and 17th century. In recent times, Dublin has seen a huge amount of development, which can be seen in the newer urban areas found in the city centre where one can marvel at impressive designs such as The Convention Centre located just off the River Liffey.

The city itself has a rich history, which dates back over a 1,000-year period to the Viking era. Following the Norman invasion of the country, Dublin became the centre of British power in the country. One of Dublin’s most famous and defining events was the 1916 Easter Rising. In April of 1916 republicans took control of several strategic locations and fought with British forces over the course of six brutal days. The British force’s superior numbers and artillery won the fight, with many arrested and leaders executed. This event sparked a new wave of republicans to join the fight and paved the way for the eventual formation of an Irish Free State. Evidence of this struggle can still be seen today on the outer façade of the GPO on O’Connell Street where you’ll find bullet holes that still line the walls.

Top attractions in Dublin City

Notable attractions found in the city centre include the Guinness Storehouse and Trinity College Dublin. The Guinness Storehouse, which is perched on the banks of the River Liffey, offers fantastic guided tours of their facility which cover the fascinating history of the company and the intricate brewing process that goes into the world-famous Irish export. Upon finishing the tour, you can visit the Gravity Bar, which towers over Dublin’s skyline. Offering fantastic views of the entire city, you can enjoy a pint of Guinness that you may pull yourself. Trinity College Dublin is the oldest university in Ireland, dating back to 1592. This beautiful college is home to one of the world’s most famous and most beautiful books, The Book of Kells. This gloriously illuminated manuscript contains the four gospels and is a must-see for history and religious enthusiasts alike.

The world-famous Irish pub culture is readily apparent in the city of Dublin. From street to street you’re bound to find a pub, trendy cocktail bar, or nightclub to fit any mood. The Temple Bar area is an ever-popular destination for tourists as the cobbled streets are home to a vast array of traditional Irish pubs offering excellent live music every night of the week.

Restaurants can be found throughout the city. A wide range of flavours are on offer as the international food scene is ever growing. International fare is coupled with delicious traditional Irish cuisine. In the city you’ll find a restaurant to fit any budget, whether it be Michelin star establishments, mid-range gastro restaurants, or creative budget dining.
