Start your road trip in Faro, the capital of the Algarve region. You can visit one of the old town historical landmarks, such as the arches of the Sé Church. From there, head south of the city to Ilha Deserta and take pictures at the remote sandy golden beaches lapped by pristine water.

Check the imposing Rococo Palacio de Estoi, 10 km south of Faro. Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the pink facade of this ancient palace turned into a hotel. Once inside, you will be dazed by the rich opulence, the exquisitely crafted rooms and the profusion of stuccoed ornaments, mirrors, and magnificently painted ceilings.

An hour west from Faro, Benagil is a small fishing village made famous for its gorgeous sea cave, the ultimate Instagram hot spot of the Algarve. You can either paddle there or hop on a boat to discover the cave and snap a great picture in a seemingly relaxed pose.

Lagos is literally a dream world of visual perfection. There is the historical centre, the imposing Moorish walls, the lovely hiking trails. Oh, and the wondrous beaches… If climbing a few stairs doesn’t put you off, try the Praia do Camilo; for another unmissable landmark, you can also visit Ponta da Piedade stunning rock formations.

Before returning your vehicle in Vila Nova de Milfontes, stop at Odeceixe on the west coast of the Algarve. The little-known village with its quaint white houses and red roofs is quiet and pleasant. And if you happen to be there in June, take the opportunity to walk around the village to admire the coloured pennants and garlands that adorn the streets during their Popular Saints Festival. As your visit is drawing to a close, immortalise some magic moments on another drop-dead gorgeous beach, Praia Odeceixe, only 4 km away….
