Top 6 National Parks Around Cairns

Daintree National Park

If you’re planning a trip to Cairns, then no doubt you’re visiting the Great Barrier Reef. What an incredible piece of nature! Swimming, snorkeling, boat tours and simply taking in the pristine wonder of the beaches. Did you know there are 6 National Parks, each with their own wonders to explore, just a day trip away from Cairns and the reef? Check out what they are all about and make the most of your stay in Cairns with our guide to the top 6 national parks around Cairns.

1. Just an hour and a half’s drive north of Cairns you’ll find Daintree National Park, the oldest living rainforest in the world. Think waterfalls cascading over boulders, species of flora and fauna you won’t find anywhere else in the world and a heritage centre telling the story of the land. Dive into lush water pools, see where the rainforest meets the sea or hike up to Alexandra look out.  Track the creatures that make the park their home, spot giant crocodiles and take part in dreamtime walks to hear the folk tales of the local people. Sounds like a day well spent, doesn’t it?

2. Barron Gorge National Park is only a 40 minute drive from Cairns but the change in scenery is dramatic – it has often been compared to Jurassic park! Sorry to disappoint, but the biggest draw isn’t dinosaurs, it’s Barron Falls, a 259 metre wide, 125 metre high waterfall. In full flow the sound is really impressive- get close enough and you can feel it vibrate right through your body. Take one of the many hiking trails to explore the unique scenery, ride the rainforest cableway for stunning views or trek to the glacier lookout. Fancy something more daring? Book a white water rafting tour!

3. Head south of Cairns to discover Wooroonooran National Park, an hour’s drive away. This beautiful park is a little off the beaten track, so if you want to avoid the crowds then this is the national park near Cairns for you. If you love to hike then you can take on the challenge of Queensland’s highest mountain. For a cooler, more relaxing experience try sliding down the rocks at Josephine Falls or swimming in a watering hole at Babinda Boulders. Love heights? Visit the tropical skywalk for a unique view of the treetops.

4. Green Island National Park is a 45 minute boat ride from Cairns, and well worth the trip. The island is situated on a coral reef platform and is home to a rainforest. Spend your day spotting clownfish & turtles as you snorkel in the shallow waters or stay dry and take a trip around the island on a glass bottomed boat. If you’re tired of the sea head inland to the resort pool. This is an island for rest and relaxation.

5. Millstream Falls National Park is located a 2-hour drive west of Cairns. As its name suggests, it’s home to some pretty amazing waterfalls. Millstream falls is Australia’s widest single waterfall drop and Little Millstream Falls has three waterfalls plunging into a single pool. The park also played an important role as a training ground in World War Two and you can walk along the WW2 Heritage Track to find out more about the campsites for the 7th and 9th divisions and the soldiers who lived in them.

6. Crater Lakes National Park is a 1 hour 15 minute drive from Cairns. The park is home to two crater lakes, made by a volcano. Who doesn’t want to swim in a former volcano? Lake Eacham is the perfect spot for swimming, with picnic areas, plenty of shade and interesting birds to spot. The locals love it. You can swim in Lake Barrine too, but look out for the cruise boats! The lakes are surrounded by lush forests and walking trails are all part of the experience. Kayaking and camping are also on offer so why not spend a night under the stars?

Wherever your outings in and around Cairns take you, you’re bound to see breath-taking scenery, work up a sweat on a hiking trail (if that’s your thing!) and have plenty of chances to cool off in the water. From local history to unique species of flora and fauna, there’s plenty to learn too. All of the parks on our Top 6 National Parks around Cairns list are within easy reach of Cairns for a day trip, especially if you rent a car.

Self-drive is often the best way to get around when visiting new places because you can stop and start as and when you want to. A sign for a waterfall caught your interest? Take a detour and find a hidden gem. Seen a view you just have to snap? Stop the car (safely!) and get that perfect picture. Need supplies for your hike? Pull into the local shop or garage. There’s nothing like doing things at your own pace.
