Europcar pulls on the lycra for Around the Bay
29 October 2012
In line with Europcar’s strong affiliation with cycling, the company proudly sponsored Bupa Around The Bay, the one-day cycling event that was staged on Sunday 21 October, to help raise money for Australian Charity, The Smith Family.
Europcar Sales and Marketing Director, Mike Warmington, said he was thrilled that Europcar was a major sponsor of Around the Bay 2012.
“This year saw a record number of more than 17 000 participants from around the world and Europcar couldn’t be more excited to be involved in such a huge day for cycling in Australia,” Mr Warmington said.
“Bupa Around the Bay has firmly established itself as Australia’s premier mass participation cycling event and, given Europcar’s commitment to the sport, it made sense for us to be part of it.
“We continue to have a strong association in the sport of cycling, both domestically and around the globe.
“This includes the sponsorship of not only Bupa Around the Bay and Amy’s Gran Fondo, but also ‘Team Europcar’ participating at international events such as the Tour de France.
“Cycling fits perfectly with Europcar’s understanding of the importance of mobility and our new brand philosophy, Moving Your Way,” Mr Warmington said.
“We encourage health and wellbeing within the community and at the same time promote safety for all road users, cyclists and motorists through our work with the Amy Gillett Foundation.
“For Europcar, sponsoring events in the cycling industry demonstrates our commitment to safe cycling and road safety.”
Seven Europcar staff members participated in the Around the Bay cycling event, with four employees tackling 210km and two participating in the 100km in Sorrento.
“Congratulations to all the riders who braved Melbourne’s unpredictable weather, some who rode for more than 13 hours,” Mr Warmington said.
“It was fantastic to see our Europcar employees proudly representing the company at an event that we sponsor and in a sport that we love.
“A total of four Europcar employees braved the 210km ride (Ferdinand Kosorog, Mathew Vecchio, Drew Dunlop and Shane Williams) and while a few didn’t quite make the distance, they were conveniently picked up by the Europcar sponsored van at the 110 mark,” Mr Warmington said.
One Europcar employee who successfully completed the 210km, Glen Christensen, said the day was an absolute hit and he was delighted that Europcar played such a pivotal role in the day.
“Europcar has a great opportunity to align with the cycling community and sponsoring events such as Bupa Around the Bay and Amy’s Gran Fondo is very exciting for me as an avid cyclist,” Mr Christensen said.
Despite the windy conditions, Mr Warmington said the overall consensus from everyone involved was that it was an incredible day to be a part of.
“All of us here at Europcar can’t wait to be involved in next year’s Around the Bay,” Mr Warmington said.
