With more than 320 days of sunshine a year, it’s not difficult to see why Townsville would be a popular destination for visitors! Plus it’s a popular starting point for boat trips to the Great Barrier Reef. Things to do obviously revolve mostly around the beach, water sports and boat trips, but the town itself has its own attractions – the Museum of Tropical Queensland, the Army Museum, and Castle Hill are all worth a visit while you’re here.

Getting out and about in your rental car, there’s much more to explore in Queensland. Travel 90 minutes south to Ravenswood, once a thriving gold mining town, now preserved as a fascinating tourist attraction. The best way to explore is on foot – wander around the mixture of ruins and preserved buildings and informative signage will give you information about the most significant sites. Don’t worry, the town isn’t entirely abandoned and around 100 people live here and run local businesses to support the tourist trade – including a pub!

Two hours north of Townsville is Cardwell, where the naturally bright blue pools of Five Mile Swimming Hole and Cardwell Spa Pools make for an unusual swimming experience. The colour comes from the minerals the water passes through as it seeps up from far underground and is truly sensational – get your camera at the ready!
