Driving in New Zealand

New Zealand’s diverse terrain means roads are often narrow, steep and winding with lots of sharp corners.

Plan your journeys with care, taking into account longer distances, rural areas and weather conditions that could affect driving. Always check the weather before you set off, in particular during the winter season when driving becomes more difficult with snow and icy roads.

Be aware that New Zealand’s railroad crossings are not all automatic. Most will flash lights when a train is approaching, but some just include stop signs. When you see this, make sure to stop, check both directions, and only cross when you are sure it is safe.

The maximum speed limit on roads (including highways) is 100 km/h and 50 km/h in urban areas. In school zones the maximum speed limit is 40 km/h. Read less
