Perth’s port city of Fremantle is around half an hour from the centre of Perth, and has its own distinct personality. Being a port city, Fremantle attractions unsurprisingly revolve around the sea and the maritime history of the area to a large extent, including the Shipwreck Galleries, the Western Australian Maritime Museum, the fishing boat harbour, and boat trips to nearby Rottnest Island.
If you want to truly make the most of your hire car, you’ll be wanting to drive out of Fremantle and see what else is on offer in the wider area.
The beaches and beautiful coastline are an obvious draw for visitors, and a three hour drive will get you to one of the loveliest resorts in the region – the Margaret River. Gorgeous beaches, great surfing, water sports, restaurants – what more could you want! Taking the seaside walking trail to the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse, where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet, will allow you to soak up the views, and work up an appetite for the fantastic regional food on offer in the local restaurants!
If you want to do something a bit different, head away from the coast to the unique inland town of New Norcia, 150km from Fremantle. Established by Benedictine Monks in 1847, it is now Australia’s only monastic town and is a peaceful place to spend a day. As well as stunning scenery and beautiful buildings, such as the monastery itself, there is also a museum explaining the history of the community.

Fremantle is filled with attractions dedicated to its nautical history as the Perth port. The free spirit comes out in a series of great craft shops, canteen-style eateries, and artisanal beer bars. Check out the Round House, the oldest building in Western Australia dating back to 1830. A former prison, the 12-sided building which was the site of the first colony hangings. There is also the Western Australian Museum Shipwreck Galleries, considered the most important of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
