Driving in Portugal

 

In Portugal, cars drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left. Passing on the right is forbidden and can incur heavy fines.

 

To rent a car in Portugal, you must be at least 23 years old to drive a rental car and have held your license for 1 year.

 

The national speed limit is 120 km/h on autoestradas (freeways), 90 km/h on main roads and 50 km/h in urban areas. If you get caught committing a driving offense, you will get an on-the- spot fine. Remember to keep your passport with you when you drive, as the police often check the ID of foreign drivers.

 

Where there are streetcars on the road, make sure to give way for passengers getting on and off.

 

Parking spaces in Portugal are indicated by blue road markings and you can pay using a public machine.
